He has worked with some of the greatest filmmakers of the past 50 years and is known for several iconic roles.
But Danny DeVito has finally revealed what he considers his biggest role yet.
In a heartwarming video shared by AARP On Sunday, the 80-year-old acting legend said his recent role as a grandfather had changed his life.
‘In two years my daughters each had a child. And ever since these babies were born, I’ve just been incorrigible,” he confessed in the sweet clip.
DeVito and his wife Rhea Perlman — whom he divorced in 2017 after 30 years of marriage but remain on good terms — share two daughters, Lucy, 41, and Grace, 39, as well as their son Jacob, 37.
“You gotta bother me in the joy department,” he added jokingly, “I just, you know, got busted.”
Danny DeVito, 80, revealed that his biggest role yet is his new status as a grandfather. He spoke about the joys of spending time with his grandchildren in an interview with AARP that was shared on Instagram on Sunday
David gushed: ‘I’m so lucky. Blessings poured over me,” adding, “And I wish it for everyone.”
Grace and her husband Andy Giannakakis welcomed their daughter Sinclair Lucille DeVito in 2023, notably choosing to keep DeVito as her last name, even though Gracie doesn’t use her father’s name.
Lucy debuted her baby bump on the SAG Awards red carpet in February 2024, and she and her fiancé welcomed a son named Carmine in July of that year.
In an extended version of the interview on YouTube, DeVito admitted that he hoped he couldn’t get enough of his young grandchildren.
‘There is a saying: a pot that is watched never boils. So I apply that to my children,” he explained. I watch them all the time because I don’t want them to cook. I want them to take their time and grow.”
He was confident that his children would follow the same strategy.
‘Don’t miss anything. Don’t look away. Because when you look back, that kid will be hula hooping,” he said.
“Imagine if Danny DeVito was your grandfather, that’s like winning the lottery,” one moved commenter wrote.

The It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia actor said he’s “just incorrigible” as his two daughters have had babies in the past two years. “You must be bothering me in the joy department.”

He said he was “so happy” and “blessed” to be able to spend time with his grandchildren, and wished the same happiness for everyone

‘Just know how you feel. They are the bomb,” someone else agreed.
‘What a sweet man!’ said one fan, while another commenter noted that it was “hilarious that he’s made a career of being a grouch – and of course he’s the opposite.”
DeVito, whose character It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia recently appeared in a crossover episode of the hit comedy Abbott Elementary, described his family as one of the most important aspects of his life.
“No matter what happens in your life, the most important thing is that you have family and friends,” he stated. ‘That’s really all we have: trustworthy people in our lives who we can talk to and open up to. I’m very lucky. Blessings have flowed over me, and I wish it for everyone.”
DeVito’s career has seen him play numerous iconic roles, including Batman’s enemy the Penguin in Tim Burton’s classic superhero film Batman Returns, as well as Frank Reynolds in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Louie De Palma in Taxi.
He is also an experienced director, known for films such as Throw Momma From The Train, The War Of The Roses and Matilda, all of which he also starred in, and he has also directed several television episodes.
Despite his long film career and countless classics in which he starred, DeVito has never been nominated for an acting award by the Academy Awards.
However, his illustrious career as a film producer earned him a Best Picture nomination in 2001 for Steven Soderbergh’s drama Erin Brokovich, although the film starring Julia Roberts lost the award to Soderbergh’s other film from that year, Traffic.
