Queen Mary of Denmark has “one-upped” her husband King Frederick in her first interview since taking the throne – and her performance left experts wondering if they are still a couple.

The Australian-born queen’s efforts in the interview, which was televised on Danish subscription television service TV 2, left royal fans confident that she has taken the reins of both the relationship and her public image after a year of scandal.

Body language expert Dr. Luisa Mahler told FEMAIL that she thinks Mary is obviously taking the initiative, while her husband has been “pouting” because he wants to be in control but “won’t let him.”

King Frederik has previously revealed his struggle to have a strong wife, saying that she has reminded him that just because he is a man doesn’t mean he is “automatically believed.” He joked that she let him know that he “may be wrong.”

Dr Mahler said that while the Queen is usually warm and attractive, her body language shows that she is completely blocking King Frederick.

The couple’s body language during the TV 2 interview was “closed” and “awkward” with Queen Mary blocking King Fred with her hands and legs and leaning with her shoulders while he “moved” the entire time (in the photo).

‘Queen Mary looks towards Frederik, but her head is tilted outwards, while her hands are also clasped with her left hand over her right and shielding herself from Frederick. In that distance she seems calm,’ she stated.

“He, on the other hand, seems a little bewildered, his hands keep moving restlessly,” she said, adding that the interview video highlighted “orange flags” in their relationship.

He noted that while most couples would be given the benefit of the doubt depending on the length of their relationship, this is not the case for the royal couple.

It is the first interview with the couple since their fairytale marriage was brought to light by a rumored romance when the then-Crown Prince was photographed enjoying a night out in Madrid in November with glamorous socialite Genoveva Casanova.

The King and Queen have tried to convey a “happy couple” image, but experts say it is just a carefully crafted façade.

In the interview, seen in full by FEMAIL, the King spoke in circles and often failed to reach a clear point, despite being asked very simple questions. This led to many in the Danish press complaining that he seemed “ridiculous”.

He got off to a bad start when he talked about boarding the Royal Yacht, where the interview took place, for the couple’s tour of Scandinavia, a summer tradition for Danish rulers.

‘It is not the first time I have gone up to the Dannebrog, I have done it many times before, this time is very special, it fills me with pride and also amazement since it is the first time I embark as a King with my Queen. Are [here as a] royal couple We’re on the royal ship,’ she said.

Queen Mary gave him a chance to answer each of the simple questions and seemed to grimace as he struggled to get his words out.

Throughout the interview, when it was obvious that the conversation was not moving forward, she took charge.

At one point, the couple was asked to share a favorite memory from the famous ship.

The King immediately intervened and said that he had more memories of the ship than Mary, as he grew up on board with his family.

“I remember joining the deck with the recruits, my brother and I were wearing the white uniform like recruits do, and also the hat,” he said.

He went into detail about the orders involved in preparing the ship for an actual voyage.

Mary took control while Frederik laughed on the floor and said his memories of the ship were wonderful.

He said they ranged from receiving a warm welcome throughout Scandinavia as the ship sailed to foreign ports to weaving between icebergs en route to Greenland.

“In recent times we have been lucky enough to have our children with us,” he said, before reflecting on the moments when the family jumped off the boat into the “deep blue sea.”

Elsewhere, the king stammered when asked how important his foreign relations are, before Queen Mary revealed they are critically important.

He added that they were nothing without their neighbors and that their friendship with them will continue in the future.

They sat next to each other, and King Frederick emphasized the couple’s united front by using the word “we” instead of “I” on countless occasions.

Royal Household commentator Jakob Steen Olsen believes the interview, including the delayed timing, suggests the couple are keen to move forward as one after months of nasty romance rumours.

He added that the sharp language suggests the couple wants to “get off to a good start without any nasty questions or agendas.”

Olsen said the television interview was the perfect “launching pad” for the couple who have remained relatively quiet since the scandal.
