The 45-year-old remains an immensely popular figure among supporters, having guided them to promotion from League One last season.

He found life tough in the Championship though and was dismissed from his position on Tuesday following an abysmal start to the campaign.

The south Yorkshire club sit second bottom of the Championship table having won just one of their 11 league matches so far.

A 5-1 defeat at home to Preston on Saturday proved to be the last straw for Stendel despite the majority of fans wishing for him to stay.

One fan wrote on Twitter: ‘Love the bloke. Absolutely mortified.’ While another joked ‘he should be re-appointed for that.’

As Sportsmail revealed this week, Motherwell’s Stephen Robinson has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Stendel.

The Northern Irishman has led Motherwell to third place in the Scottish Premiership this season and it is understood he is under serious consideration by the Barnsley owners.
