Daniel is in town to promote his new film Queer, which premieres at the festival on September 3.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Queer is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by William Burroughs and stars Craig as American expatriate and war veteran William Lee, who has an affair with a younger man, Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a drug addict and discharged Navy SEAL.

Initial reviews suggest that viewers will be surprised by the explicit nature of some of the film’s key moments.

One much-talked-about scene in particular sees Craig performing oral sex on Allerton.

Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera said he believes Craig has given “the performance of a lifetime” in Queer, adding that he would be surprised if we didn’t see the British actor at the Academy Awards next year.

It would be Craig’s first Oscar nomination.

The 81st Venice International Film Festival is organised by the Biennale di Venezia and will take place at the Lido di Venezia from 28 August to 7 September 2024.

Sigourney Weaver will receive the prestigious Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award during the festival.
