Barcelona have informed defender Dani Alves that his contract will not be renewed after the current season, meaning he will leave the club at the end of June.

The Brazilian star made a romantic return to the club in January on a free transfer after a spell with Sao Paulo in his native Brazil.

Alves, 39, performed well in the latter part of the La Liga season, as Barcelona reversed their stuttering start to the season, eventually finishing the season in second place behind champions Real Madrid.

But according to SPORT, Alves was told on Tuesday morning that he will not be offered a contract extension.

The veteran defender is still playing for his country and is now on holiday after appearing for the Selecao on their recent tour of Asia.

Following news of his impending release, it is uncertain when and where Alves will play his next game, but a move to a European club could make financial sense for the Brazilian at this stage of his career.

The 39-year-old had applied for a new contract at the Camp Nou, which would run at least until the end of the year, as he is looking for a spot in Brazil’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar in November, the only major trophy which he won. have eluded him.

But the cramped Barcelona believe they have ample cover as right-backs in Sergi Roberto and Serginho Dest as they plot a transfer for Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

In a typically classy response, Alves took to Instagram to say goodbye to the club and its supporters.

Now the time has come for our farewells. It has been devoted to these colors and that house for over 8 years… but like everything in life, the years pass, roads part and stories are written from different places – and so it was. They tried to get rid of me but they couldn’t, well, you can’t imagine, or maybe you can, how resistant and resilient I am,” said the Brazilian legend.

“Many more years passed until football and life, which as always is very grateful to those who respect them, decided to give me the chance to come back here and say goodbye.”

But no goodbyes without first thanking everyone who is behind the spotlight, everyone who makes sure everything is perfect for us, all: THANK YOU.

“Let’s also hope that those who continue to make history at this club, I hope from the bottom of my heart.
