A woman is fighting for her life after being attacked by three dogs in a backyard.

Emergency services were called to a home on Ross Street in Dandenong, south-east of Melbourne, about 10am on Thursday.

Police attempted to stop the attack by using capsicum spray on the animals, but the dogs continued to attack the woman and had to be shot dead.

The woman remains in critical condition in hospital and police are investigating.
