A child has died after being caught in a house fire, while a neighbor who tried to save their life was taken to hospital with severe burns.

The house went up in flames at 10 p.m. on Leonard Street in Dandenong, southeastern Melbourne, on Sunday.

Three adults and two children fled the fire and escaped without injury, while another child was tragically killed.

A neighbor, in his thirties, tried to save the small child but suffered severe burns in the rescue attempt.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Police have set up a crime scene and are investigating the cause of the fire.

A woman has also died in a separate blaze after a blaze swept through a property at Badge Court in Melbourne’s south west Melbourne just after midnight.

Two other residents managed to escape the fire, while the woman was found dead in the ‘heavily damaged’ home.
