Joe Pyfer’s role as the UFC’s new golden boy was demolished Saturday night, suffering a unanimous decision loss to Jack Hermansson at UFC Vegas 86.
In the five-round main event, Hermansson dominated the final three rounds of the fight to earn a 48-47 verdict on all three judges’ scorecards.
Pyfer appeared to run out of steam in the five-minute third round after beating Hermansson with punches during the first 10 minutes of the fight.
This was Pyfer’s first loss with the promotion and his first fight inside the octagon that ended on the judges’ scorecards. This was also Pyfer’s first main event fight in the UFC.
Hermansson has been in the UFC since 2016 and was by far the most experienced fighter Pyfer has faced in the promotion. That led some UFC fans on social media to be happy with Pyfer being knocked down a few notches.
Pyfer fought in his first UFC main event and lost to Hermansson via unanimous decision.
Hermansson outworked Pyfer in the final three rounds of the middleweight fight.
“Dana’s son was checked for fraud,” said a fan on X.
“The man was saying that (Alex) Pereira is nothing special and then he acts like that,” another fan said with a laughing emoji. ‘What a special fighter Pyfer is!!’
“Yes, I can confidently say that Joe Pyfer does NOT hit harder than (Francis) Ngannou,” one fan claimed on social media.
“The hype train went off the rails lol,” another fan stated.
A collection of social media messages shows how Pyfer performed compared to expectations
After the fight, Pyfer was gracious in defeat, knowing that this won’t be the last time we see him in the promotion.
‘I don’t think anything has surprised me with all the media I’ve been doing. And these are not excuses. I guess Jack was better tonight,” Pyfer said in the Octagon moments after the fight.
Pyfer will have a chance to get back into the win column, probably in a few months, after showing a lot of confidence before Saturday’s loss.
