Dan Walker jokes with his make-up artist about hiding his ‘black eye and fat lip’ on Five News

Broadcaster Dan Walker has shared a behind-the-scenes laughing clip to Channel Five News as he returns to work after a cycling accident.

The newsreader, 45, was left with a swollen face and a black eye after being hit by a car while cycling in Sheffield last month.

In the Instagram post, Walker introduced “makeup queen” Ally as he praised her skills in hiding his injuries.

He said, “Hi there, just getting ready to go on Five News and a lot of questions about the eye makeup after getting a black eye and a little bit of a fat lip.

Well, let me introduce you to makeup queen Ally, I’ve even seen on this video that there’s a bit of shimmer up there (points to his forehead) if you can just sort that out. She’s very good!’

He has since followed his progress with a series of posts in the days that followed, before showing off his remarkable recovery in a backstage video from the Royal Television Society Journalism Awards last night.

Mr Walker then appeared on Jeremy Vine On 5 this morning to discuss the events of the past week and a half, revealing that he still has ‘bumps, bumps and abrasions’ and a bruise on his right hip, and that his children have compared him to Wolverine, the Marvel character known for his healing powers.

He also revealed how rewatching his old Strictly dances with on-screen partner Nadiya Bychkova had helped in his recovery.

“Strictly, for me it was a mental strain in terms of learning those dance moves and trying to get a grip on them,” he said.

“So I looked back at my old dances and I paused them and I tested my brain and my body to see if my brain remembers what the next move is and if my body can remember it, and it did on every occasion.”

“So I told Nadiya that she helped me with my recovery from this accident, so Strictly is helping, even years later.”

He added: ‘I am very grateful to the paramedics, the police and the people who looked after me at the hospital.

“When I spoke to the police last week I learned that there were five people who came into the roundabout when I got off their bike and sat with me for 25 minutes until the ambulance came.

“I don’t remember anything about that, I don’t remember anything from when I got to the roundabout.

“But it’s that kind of thing, the goodness of people in difficult situations, so I’m very grateful to be here and doing the work I love, back on television later.”

Mr Walker explained last week how he left home early to catch the train and drove on the roundabout rather than a cycle path because it was often covered in shards of glass.

The presenter said he had not been able to view the footage of the accident, but after speaking to police again, he is “convinced” that he is not at fault in the accident.

Mr Walker has also asked to speak to the driver and said he hopes the matter can be resolved out of court.

He added: ‘I remember coming to the roundabout, I looked to the right, I saw an opening and I went.

“The next thing I remember… it’s almost an out-of-body experience. I saw myself looking at a black screen and then the screen expanded from a white circle in the center of it and into that circle came the heads of two paramedics, a police officer and the driver who hit me in the car.

“I can’t remember anything that happened during that time. I know there’s a video doing the rounds, but I haven’t watched it, I don’t want to see it, I don’t have flashbacks and I don’t want them.

“I’m just really thankful to be here, I’m okay, and the scans all say my brain is fine, so if I can get out with a few bumps and punches then I can say I’m very thankful.” ‘

The interview came just hours after he posted a video to Instagram revealing the extent of his recovery, attributing it to “the magic of makeup and prescription drugs.”

He said, ‘Hello everyone, Dan Walker here. We’ve just won the Royal Television Society’s journalism awards.

“We have big chandeliers, look at the stage, it’s pretty hip. We’ve had all the big hitters there tonight, throwing the gongs, people still enjoying a little celebration.

“Hope you enjoyed our Instagram stories and thank you for having me.

“The magic of makeup and prescription drugs has enabled me to perform on stage tonight.

“Hope you had a great night, congratulations to all our winners and thanks for following us on Instagram Stories, see you again soon.”

Last night, he also shared pre-show photos on his Instagram story of himself on the train to London and later on an elevator with his tuxedo in a bag.

“Thank you @alliedrewmua for covering the bruises for the @royaltelevisionsociety awards,” he captioned the photo.
