Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer retired as a coach after 38 years at the Cardinal helm and will leave the sport as the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history.

VanDerveer’s record of 1,216 NCAA wins also includes seven years as head coach at Idaho and Ohio State.

VanDerveer, 70, led Stanford to three NCAA championships in 1990, 1992 and 2021.

She is scheduled to be replaced by former Cardinal player and longtime assistant coach Kate Paye as the program moves to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

VanDerveer took a season-long break from coaching at Stanford in 1995 to coach the United States women’s basketball team in the 1996 Olympics.
