Dad, 30, who used his Alexa camera device to watch his five-year-old daughter while he went on a pub crawl before attacking his girlfriend admits to neglecting children
- He was supposed to look after his child, but he visited pubs instead, the court heard
- The man was also arrested for strangling his new partner after drinking heavily
A father lost custody of his young daughter after he left an Alexa to babysit while he went on a bar crawl with his new girlfriend, whom he then strangled after the drinking session turned violent.
The 30-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, left the sleeping five-year-old alone as he visited a ‘series of pubs’ in Builth Wells, Powys, with an Alexa at her bedside.
A court heard the man tell police he “voluntarily left his daughter at home” at 8pm because he could see her through the Amazon Alexa camera while he was in the pub.
The child’s neglect was only discovered when neighbors alerted police to screams coming from the garden at 2am, whereupon he was arrested for strangling his new partner.

Prosecutor Rebecca Ross said the child lived half the time with the defendant and the other half with her mother.
Mrs Ross said: ‘They were drinking vodka and gin with lemonade at home from about 8pm. The defendant’s daughter was in the house but in bed.
“He wasn’t planning on going out, but he wasn’t happy when she said she was going out without him, so he went out too.
“He put an Alexa camera in the bedroom so he could keep an eye on the kid while they were gone. She wasn’t sure he went back at night to check on her.’
The court heard he was supposed to be in charge of caring for his daughter, but instead “went to a series of pubs” around the town.
A neighbor was alerted around 2 a.m. by screams in the garden.
PC Phillip Coombs arrived at 2.10am to find the couple arguing and that they ‘needed to be separated’.
‘In his later interrogation he stated that he grabbed the victim by the throat; he told her to shut up and to calm down,’ Mr Davies added.
“He said he left his daughter at home but had an Alexa camera app on his phone to monitor her snoring.”
Gareth Walters, defending himself, said: ‘He is a young man of rather good character, who has been found guilty of serious offences.
The consequences of this will be felt for a long time to come. His daughter was taken away and it was largely him who took care of her.
“He felt he was watching his daughter, but he realizes you can’t do that remotely. He made some effort to keep an eye on her, but he knows the standards fell short of what is expected of a parent.”
The man, who cannot be named to protect his child’s identity, admitted to being deliberately strangled and neglected at magistrates court in Llandrindod Wells, Powys.
Magistrates sentenced the father to 12 months’ imprisonment suspended for two years.
