Czechia’s Euro 2024 hopes have suffered a blow following the injury of midfielder Michal Sadilek, who was forced to withdraw from the tournament after falling off a bicycle.
The 25-year-old plays football in Holland with FC Twente and participated in the last European Championship. Sadilek also captained his nation in the 7-1 victory over Malta on Friday.
A statement from the Czech Football Federation confirmed on Sunday that the player would miss the tournament after “suffering a laceration to his leg” following the fall.
Coach Ivan Hasek confirmed that Sadilek said losing the star, who has been capped 24 times by the national team, is a big blow.
“This is a big setback for us, because Michal is one of our experienced players,” Hasek said. “Not in vain did he wear the captain’s armband during the match against Malta.”

Sadilek played 90 minutes in his team’s emphatic victory on Friday, as well as five games during Czechia’s qualifying campaign for the tournament.
The team will play against North Macedonia on June 10 in its final preparation match for the championship. Czechia will begin their campaign against Portugal on June 18 before matches against Georgia and then Turkey on June 22.
