That was close! Moment cyclist narrowly escapes crush by tree as he crashes on London street
- A cyclist was nearly hit by a collapsing tree in Bermondsey, South East London
- The incident was captured on CCTV by local resident Phillip Lam
- The tree damaged a few parked cars and had to be taken off the road
A cyclist cheated inches tall when a tree collapsed on a residential street in south-east London.
The shocking incident was captured by local resident Phillip Lam’s CCTV camera on a side street near Old Kent Road at 5.15pm on Wednesday, July 28.
Mr Lam only saw the narrow escape when he reviewed the footage, about five minutes after the tree had fallen.
The video shows the cyclist approaching. As they pass under the tree, which is already overhanging the street, you can see the branches and trunk tilt towards them.
The rider is barely clear of the last branches as the tree topples and sends up a small cloud of debris.
After slowing down to survey the scene, the cyclist turns right and continues on his way.

He said he believed the tree had collapsed after recent heavy rains destabilized it.
“It damaged a few parked cars,” he added. “The police have called the municipality to remove the tree.”
In recent weeks, the UK has been plagued by rain, especially in London, where many areas have experienced severe flooding.
