A competitive cyclist who was allegedly hit by a P-Plater on Tuesday has died in hospital and the driver has been charged with negligent driving causing death.

Nick Sky, 47, underwent surgery for a traumatic brain injury suffered during the horrific crash on Sydney’s northern beaches, but died on Thursday.

He and his friend Michael Collings, 56, were seriously injured in the incident after they were allegedly hit by a car driven by a 24-year-old man at around 6.10am on Forest Way in Belrose.

Sky was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in critical condition, while Collings was flown to the same hospital with serious injuries.

P-Plater was unharmed and underwent mandatory tests at a hospital before being taken to Manly police station.

He was charged with careless driving (occasionally grievous bodily harm) and causing bodily harm by misconduct in charge of a motor vehicle.

He has since been charged with a further offense of careless driving causing death.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Manly Local Court on July 24.

Mr Sky and Mr Collings, both from Sydney’s north shore, were training regularly for the Masters races later this year.

The accident left their bikes mangled on the side of the road, and Collings suffered multiple fractures and a dislocated shoulder.

Sky’s son Lachlan, who is also a competitive cyclist, was cycling to work when he received the terrible news about his father and arrived at the scene visibly shaken and distressed.

Local Rob Arnold said there was “quite a bit of debris on the road”.

‘And I just saw the vehicle that appears to have been involved and it doesn’t look pretty. It’s really disturbing,’ she said.

The Subaru pickup truck involved suffered severe damage to its windshield due to the impact.
