Cycling can also touch women’s love lives! More than half of female riders have sexual problems due to ‘nerve compression’ caused by bicycle seats, study shows

  • Researchers found that more than half of female cyclists had sexual problems
  • These were the result of ‘nerve compression’ caused by their bicycle seats
  • The study found the most experienced ‘numbness’ associated with a ‘modest increase in risk of sexual dysfunction in women’

Male cyclists have long been aware of the potential risks of saddles to their sexual performance, but a new study shows that women are also vulnerable.

Researchers found that more than half of female cyclists had sexual problems as a result of “nerve compression” caused by bicycle seats.

The study of 875 women from Britain, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand found that most of them experienced ‘numbness’ associated with a ‘modest increased risk of sexual dysfunction in women’.

Scientists at the University of California at San Francisco said women who ride bicycles with drop handlebars are most at risk.

Saddle design has changed little since bicycles were invented nearly 200 years ago, and experts believe that manufacturers should consider the demands of women.

“This research is essential to inform bicycle manufacturers about designing safer seats and protective gear for female cyclists,” the scientists wrote in the study published in the journal Sexual Medicine.
