Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson insists he is in the dark over Wilfried Zaha’s proposed move to Everton, and has also bemoaned the lack of new players signed this transfer window.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hodgson said: ‘I thought we were pretty much all on the same page, that we definitely need players, because our squad is very small. But I’m afraid at the moment we’re still there with the ones that started pre-season training.

‘The only addition is Jordan Ayew, and I knew that he was coming back as soon as the African Cup was over.’

Hodgson admits that Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s big money move to Manchester United has left a hole in defence, and that certain areas need to be improved upon.

‘We need players in certain positions, for example Aaron Wan-Bissaka has not been replaced,’ he said. ‘We don’t have two right-backs at the club at the moment. We don’t have two left-backs either.

‘Simple things like that need dealing with. In other areas we can get by because we do have bodies. But we were hoping to improve our time and compensate for the loss of Aaron Wan-Bissaka because he’s going to be a big loss for us. He was so good the last season and a half.’

However, Hodgson is confident that Crystal Palace will bolster the squad before the start of the season.

‘Sporting director Doug Freedman and our chairman Steve Parish, I know they are working hard to find the right people to bring in. I’m confident that before the start of the season this squad will look bigger in terms of numbers and stronger in terms of the quality of player we bring in.’

The Palace manager was also questioned over the latest developments in the Wilfried Zaha transfer saga, but said he doesn’t know any more than the press.

When asked about Everton's £60million bid for the winger, he simply replied: 'Don't know.'

‘He’s dealing with the chairman at the moment, the chairman’s his link and they get on very well.

‘Most of what’s going on with Wilfried is going on between him and the chairman. I can’t enlighten you at all, I know what you know I guess. I know it through reading on your websites or newspapers that this or that’s happening.’
