Cruel Intentions Return! Iconic 1999 will be adapted into an eight-episode streaming series on Amazon

A streaming series based on the iconic 1999 teen movie Cruel Intentions is in the works at Amazon.

The news about the project has been revealed before TVLine On Tuesday, it was also reported that the show officially received an order for a total of eight episodes.

The film, which stars Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Manhattan prep school students, has become a cult classic since its release nearly 25 years ago.

According to TVLine, the project is set to go into production later this month, with physical production scheduled to take place in Toronto.

Insiders have stated that the show is in development for Amazon Freevee, though it will likely be ported to Prime Video.

Cruel Intentions is based on the 1782 novel Les Liaisons Danger, written by Pierre Chauderlos de Laclos.

The movie is about a pair of siblings who bet on one’s ability to seduce one of their classmates.

In addition to his three performances, the film also starred artists such as Selma Blair and Joshua Jackson.

The film received mixed reviews from critics at the time of its original release, although it was a box office hit.

A pair of direct-to-video sequels, neither of which featured members of the first film’s crew, were released in 2001 and 2004.

A musical based on the film debuted in 2015 and has been remade on several occasions since then.

A TV pilot starring Gellar and serving as a sequel to the movie was produced in 2016, though the project was ultimately not picked up by any networks.
