Worshipers met on September 9 in the village of B Thandrapadu in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh to observe Muharram, a popular Muslim festival.

Villagers had dug a pit and filled it with glowing embers as part of a fire hike ritual – and dozens of spectators had climbed the roofs of nearby houses to view the ceremony with a good view.

Debris and many of those who gathered at the parapet fell on the crowd below and caused disgust among the revelers during the religious ceremony.

The wounded were rushed to the Kurnool Government General Hospital for treatment.

Of the 20 injured, five have suffered head and bone fractures.

The police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
