Police believe they have found the remains of a 12-year-old girl who went missing after a suspected crocodile attack.

The young woman was last seen swimming in Mango Creek in the remote community of Nganmarriyanga in the Northern Territory, 360 kilometres southwest of Darwin, and was reported missing at 5.30pm on Tuesday.

Senior Sergeant Erica Gibson said the girl had reportedly been attacked by a crocodile and an extensive search had since been launched.

“This is devastating news for the family, the community and everyone involved in the search,” he said.

‘Police are providing support to the family and the community, along with first responders who responded to the scene.’

Sgt Gibson said there was evidence of crocodiles in the area but the crocodile control team had not seen any since the attack.
