Cristiano Ronaldo will return to the Manchester United squad for their UEFA Europa League match against Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday night, manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed.

The Portuguese star was ruled out of United’s squad for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea after petulantly walking through the tunnel before the end of their win over Tottenham at Old Trafford and refusing to come on as a substitute.

Ronaldo backpedaled on his battle of wills with Ten Hag after they held talks and he rejoined training with the team at Carrington on Tuesday, having been forced to do physical work alone.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who returned to team training on Tuesday, will be in the Manchester United squad for their Europa League match against Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday night.

Ronaldo had been banished from the first-team picture after his departure from Old Trafford last week.

Ronaldo refused to enter and left Old Trafford before full time in a 2-0 win over Spurs.

Ten Hag was reluctant to discuss the Ronaldo issue at his Wednesday lunchtime news conference, but confirmed he would be in the squad on Thursday night.

“Yes, Cristiano will be in the team tomorrow,” said Ten Hag.

The two men are said to have been in constant dialogue over the past few days and Ten Hag was satisfied enough with what he heard that Ronaldo was back in the fold yesterday morning when the players resumed training after two days off.

It’s a significant victory for Ten Hag, who was left with no choice but to punish United’s most outstanding player for defying his authority.

The Dutchman must now hope that Ronaldo stays in line, at least until the January transfer window, when his future at Old Trafford can be reassessed.

The 37-year-old still wants to leave and United would be willing to let him go if they can sign a replacement.

Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes is believed to have spoken with Newcastle in recent days, but finding an alternative club for the former Real Madrid and Juventus star midway through the season may prove difficult.

For Ronaldo, too, it was important to end the incident and return to action, with Portugal’s first World Cup match against Ghana less than a month away.

United will confirm themselves in the top two of their Europa League group if they win, draw or avoid defeat by more than one goal on Thursday night.

However, they need to win for their Matchday 6 away encounter with Spanish side Real Sociedad to be decisive for top spot, which would prevent them from facing a Champions League drop out in the play-off round.
