Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to his ‘brother’ Marcelo who will leave Real Madrid this summer after 15 years at the club.

Marcelo, who held an emotional press conference with club president Florentino Perez on Monday, formally announcing his departure, is leaving Real Madrid as the most decorated player ever.

The Portuguese, who left Real Madrid for Juventus in 2018, paid tribute to his former teammate on Instagram, calling him “more than a teammate”.

He wrote: ‘More than a teammate, a brother who gave football to me.’

“On and off the pitches, one of the biggest stars I had the pleasure of sharing a dressing room with,” he added.

“Join everything on this new adventure, Marcelo!”

Ronaldo and Marcelo had nine brilliant years together at the Bernabeu, during which time the Portuguese became the club’s all-time goalscorer and won a host of trophies.

Marcelo and Ronaldo formed a partnership on the left that was key to Real Madrid’s astonishing period of success in the second half of the 2010s.

Notable achievements have included two league titles in 2011-12 and 2016-17, in addition to Champions League titles in 2013-14, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Ronaldo and Marcelo both scored in the final of the ‘La Decima’ win over Atletico Madrid in 2014 in Lisbon.

They also won the Copa Del Rey in 2010-11 and 2013-14.

The press conference held Monday in Marcelo’s honor brought an end to what the Brazilian previously called a “beautiful chapter.”

In a room filled with Real Madrid legends, including Raul and Carlo Ancelotti, Perez spoke first and hailed Marcelo as one of the club’s greatest players of all time.

He said: ‘Today we give thanks to our great captain, one of our greatest legends. The player with the most titles in Real Madrid history. Marcelo.’

“Dear Marcelo, you are one of the greatest left-backs in the history of Real Madrid and of football. Dear Marcelo, you have fulfilled all the dreams you had when you were only 18 years old.

He added: ‘Twenty-five titles, 564 games and 38 goals. You are one of the greatest. Real Madrid will always be your home.

‘Thank you for everything you’ve done. Dear Marcelo, our fans will always keep you in their hearts. We are proud.’

Meanwhile, Marcelo called Real Madrid the ‘biggest’ club of them all and said this was not a goodbye as he didn’t feel like he was going to leave.

“I played for the best club in the world,” he said.

He added: ‘I want to thank my wife Clarice, I wouldn’t be the man I am without her. And my sons who saw their father play for the biggest club in the world.’

He also praised Raul, who was the club’s captain when he returned in 2007, for his inspiration and impact on his career.

“Thank you Raul for being a captain and setting an example for me. I never said it, but you’ve been my role model. Thank you,’ he said.
