Fans have mocked Cristiano Ronaldo’s ridiculous free-kick attempt after the Portugal star attempted a shot from an outrageous angle against Slovenia.
The 39-year-old impressed in the opening minutes of the Euro 2024 round of 16 match in Frankfurt as he desperately sought to open his scoring account in the tournament.
Ronaldo is competing in his sixth – and probably last – European Championship and is determined to win the title for a second time with Portugal.
However, his attempt to find the back of the net in Germany has yet to result in a goal and fans were left aghast when Ronaldo tried to score from an almost impossible angle against Slovenia.
A free-kick awarded to Portugal deep in the Slovenia half, close to the corner flag, looked destined to be headed in off the post by Manchester City playmaker Bernardo Silva.

But captain Ronaldo used the authority of his armband to overrule the decision and seized the ball as he attempted to test Jan Oblak from distance.
The effort from an incredibly acute angle never really earned a finish and Ronaldo’s optimistic effort predictably ended up just wide and wide for a goal-kick.
He had taken a better shot, inches over the bar, moments earlier as Portugal pressed for an opening goal.
Fans on social media were quick to criticise Ronaldo’s torrid free-kick, with one post on X reading: “What the hell is Ronaldo doing shooting from there? Pathetic.”

Another commenter added something similar: “This is disgraceful from Ronaldo,” as the veteran striker smiled ruefully after his bizarre attempt.
A third critic posting online told Ronaldo to “retire” after it was revealed the five-time Champions League winner had only scored one in his last 58 free-kicks.
If Ronaldo fails to score against Slovenia, it would be the seventh consecutive game in a major tournament with Portugal in which he has failed to find the goal.
Another damning post mocking the Al-Nassr star joked: “Ronaldo is so desperate to score a goal that he is taking free-kicks from anywhere.”
