Stephen Chappell, son of former Australia captain Greg, was named his country’s new Air Force Chief on Tuesday, after first discovering his passion for flying after watching Top Gun as a nine-year-old boy with his father. .

“We went out and I said, ‘What did you think of that?’ and he said, ‘That was fantastic, that’s what I want to do when I’m older.’ He basically never strayed,” Greg told The Australian.

His other son, Jonathan, played baseball professionally in the United States and, although Stephen showed great promise as a cricketer, his only goal was to fly.

“If he had chosen cricket or sport we would have supported him, but I don’t think it’s an easy path to take when you’re following a parent in that area.”

Greg purchased flight simulators for Stephen before joining the Australian Defense Force Academy. He was eventually sent overseas before rising through the ranks.

The former Australia captain said his son’s achievements eclipse everything he achieved on the cricket field and said he was “amazed” by Stephen’s ability to balance his demanding job while also being a great father to his children. .

“At first we were stunned by his huge appointment as (Air Force) chief,” Greg said.

“It was obviously on that trajectory, but it wasn’t something we expected in the short term.”
