- Cricket fans mock South Africa
- Australia made a fast start to the semi-final
- Proteas have a long history of ‘choking’
Australia made a blistering start to their Cricket World Cup semi-final on Thursday, which appears to be the same old story for South Africa.
The Proteas, who have earned a reputation as the bridesmaids of white-ball cricket, won the toss and elected to bat first in Delhi.
But that decision looked miserable after 12 overs with the South Africans reduced to 24-4 following outstanding bowling from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
And cricket fans were quick to rub salt in the wounds of the hapless South Africans, taking to X – the social media platform formerly known as Twitter – to mock the Proteas.
“Creating a better love story than the South Africa cricket team being stifled in the ICC knockout stages seems like a difficult task,” said one fan.

Australia got off to a blistering start on Thursday, reducing their rivals to 24-4.

Australia are in good form at the perfect time, but the same cannot be said for South Africa.

Cricket fans have accused the Proteas of ‘choking’ again in Thursday’s match
Another posted: “South Africa and Australia live up to their respective names. South Africa are choking as always while Australia are going through their crossing.
“I don’t even think it’s a choking issue at this point,” a third fan said. “South Africa is just cursed, with voodoo idiots and all.”
