Indy Star columnist Gregg Doyel asked a couple of hair-raising questions during Wednesday’s press conference with Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark.

In addition to her request that Clark make heart-shaped hand gestures at her before games (a comment that sparked outrage across the country), Doyel also referred to the WNBA sensation as “it” and “it ” during a question addressed to

“You’ve just been given the keys to it,” he told Fever coach Christie Sides. ‘What are you going to do with that?’

Sides responded by humanizing Clark instead of referring to her as a lifeless object: ‘Hopefully we win a lot of games to be the main character. She’ll help us with that.’

Spokespeople for the Indy Star and its parent company, Gannett, did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s request for comment Thursday morning.

The headline of Wednesday’s press conference was the awkward exchange Clark endured with Doyel.

She began by imitating the celebratory gesture Clark makes to her family after every game in which she makes a heart shape with her hands.

“I do that with my family after every game,” Clark said.

Doyel then made the most regrettable comment of the press conference: ‘Well, listen, start doing it to me and we’ll get along.’

Doyel has since offered his apology online.

“Today, in my own uniquely clumsy way, while welcoming @CaitlinClark22 to Indy, I formed her signature with my hands,” the journalist wrote on X.

‘My subsequent comment was clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize. Please know that my heart (literally and figuratively) meant well. I will do it better.’
