The Canadian filmmaker, 69, is “seriously suspected of the crimes of aggravated assault and grievous bodily harm” against a non-Italian woman, prosecutors said in Brindisi, southern Italy.

The prosecutor’s office did not respond to requests for more information outside office hours on Sunday.

Haggis wrote and produced Best Picture Oscar winner ‘Crash’ and wrote the script for Daniel Craig Bond film ‘Quantum of Solace’.

The alleged victim stayed with Haggis prior to the festival, prosecutors said.

“The suspect allegedly forced the young woman, whom he met some time ago, to have sexual intercourse,” she added.

After an encounter, the woman was “forced to seek medical attention.”

A voice message and email left with one of Haggis’ lawyers was not immediately returned, AFP reported.

Variety confirmed with LA-based journalist Silvia Bisio, who was to host a panel with Haggis, that he had been arrested.

She said the festival is “completely distancing itself” from Haggis and will issue a statement to that effect, trade reported
