An uncle was allegedly stabbed to death by his nephew after a fight broke out in the home they shared in a small town.

Paul Mann, 55, was allegedly stabbed inside the Running Creek Road property in Kilkivan, west of Gympie, Queensland, on Friday afternoon.

Police will allege that Mann’s nephew, James Neale, 42, stabbed his uncle during the fight.

It is understood that a health worker went to the house for a routine visit but heard the fighting and called the emergency services, the mail reported.

A police officer arrived shortly after 3:15 p.m. to assist ambulance workers when Neale allegedly ran toward the officer armed with a knife.

The officer attempted to retreat and negotiate with Mr Neale, but was forced to shoot him.

Neale is in hospital in a coma and police have not yet spoken to him. No charges have been filed.

Mr Mann has been described as a “friendly” local who had suffered a horrific car accident decades earlier, in his teenage years, which left him permanently injured.

A Kilkivan resident said Mann was often seen on his motorized scooter at the general store and pharmacy.

“He was a lovely, friendly man,” they said.

Acting Superintendent Paul Algie said on Saturday that the officer had no choice but to shoot Mr Neale.

“He shot him once in the chest and then immediately came to his aid to provide first aid as per his training,” Supt Algie said.

‘The police officer attempted to retreat and negotiate with the man and did so over a long period of time…unfortunately he was left with no choice but to fire his service pistol.

“Upon police support arriving, Goomeri’s colleagues and friends assisted with first aid not only to the suspect but also to the man who had been initially stabbed.”

The police officer who came to assist the ambulance officers attempted to withdraw and negotiate with Mr Neale (pictured, police officer outside the crime scene in the small rural town of Kilkivan).

Superintendent Algie also described the incident as an “unusual set of circumstances”.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said the incident was any officer’s worst nightmare.

“It’s a rural town, it’s a rural police officer, coming in to help the Queensland Ambulance Service on his own, and he’s faced with a place where he’s suddenly having to fend for his life,” he said. Mr. Leavers.

“So this will not only affect him and his colleagues in rural police stations across Queensland, it will also affect the close-knit community of Kilkivan and this will be very difficult for the city.”
