Courteney Cox has revealed she was blindsided when she split from her fiancé Johnny McDaid one minute into a relationship therapy session, but admitted she's grateful it happened - they're now back together (pictured in February).

Friends star Courteney Cox has revealed that Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid dumped her one minute into their first therapy session aimed at trying to improve their relationship.

Courteney, 59, said that although it caused her immense pain, she is now grateful for her 47-year-old ex-fiance’s bravery, saying it has helped her and their relationship improve.

The couple got back together.

she told him Minnie’s Questions podcast: ‘Johnny and I broke up five years ago. Then three years later we broke up and it was really intense. We broke up in therapy.

‘I didn’t know it was coming. Whether I should have or not, it was like we went to this therapist to talk about our boundaries: what we could and couldn’t accept about each other.

‘Instead, he just snapped in the first minute. And I was like “What?” And we were committed. And she was so surprised, she was in so much pain, I don’t like surprises either.

‘And he’s an incredible human being, so he wasn’t trying to shock. He was suffering a lot in the relationship.

‘There were so many things to deal with that he had to guard around his heart.

“So instead of saying ‘Fuck it’ and going into this rage mode, I leaned in and did the most work on myself by far.”

And he added: “I learned to recover my voice, my limits, what my motives were in life, what my role in this was.”

“I’m so grateful for that breakup because, when we got back together, it was a different relationship, but also because it really taught me how I operated in the world: what were the things from my childhood that I needed.”

‘If he was to be worshiped by men. Things I didn’t know how to let go to be in a relationship. Don’t take things personally. My limits, I just went into myself and I had a great therapist.

‘I went to the same one. I kept seeing him, the one we met on the day of the breakup. And it was brutal going to his office after that for a while. But then it was great.

“And I’m really grateful that a) nothing will ever hurt this much again and b) most of all, most importantly, I’ve completely changed.”

He added: “It takes a lot of courage to end something you have so much passion for, or to end anything.”

‘In any type of relationship, it’s much easier to stay, put up with things, and make excuses. You know that the fear of pain is too difficult to handle.

‘But once you are bold enough to make decisions and overcome the pain.

‘You can’t help it, so just go through it and then when you do, everything will be easier.

“I’m grateful that Johnny was so bold and brave because it changed my life and I’m sure it changed his.”

The couple downgraded their relationship from committed to simply “together” when they reunited, a regression that Cox admitted was “strange.”

But in 2022, Cox said she was not opposed to marrying Johnny.
