Development on the episode began in 2019 when it was reported that Warner Bros. Television was actively getting the show’s cast back together for a one-off project.

In February last year, it was confirmed that all the stars of the series would reunite for the special and that co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane would return as executive producers.

Physical production on the episode was initially set to begin in March last year, although the onset of the global pandemic forced the crew to postpone work on the project.

Filming was then delayed until August, although the team decided to delay filming for a second time due to safety concerns.

Production finally kicked off in April and began in Stage 24, also known as The Friends Stage, at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.

Although the special episode initially premiered in May last year, it was postponed to 2021 due to multiple production delays.

The reunion premiered on Thursday and featured several guest stars including Lady Gaga, David Beckham and Tom Selleck, among many others.

James Michael Tyler and Maggie Wheeler, who starred in the original series, both showed up during the episode.

During the special, several revelations about the cast and their characters were made, and it was voiced that Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer were both in love with each other during filming and chose to suppress their feelings.

It was also made clear that Geller and Chandler Bing, played by Matthew Perry, were not originally going to end up as a couple, although test comments showed the producers that their dynamics were popular with audiences.

Cox closed the special by stating that the episode would be the last time one of the actors would discuss the show together and that a continuation of the series would not take place under any circumstances.
