“If you’re criticizing, I want to know why.”
So say American tourists Cara Atwell and Jeremy Davis as they film their first trip to a Toby Carvery to try a Sunday roast, which they describe as “quite tasty”.
The couple try their best to get to the “roast house”, taking a train with their dog, Carly, from Ashford, where they were staying, and then a bus.
After a mile-long walk, they finally arrive at the restaurant in Westwood Cross, Ramsgate, and are pleasantly surprised by how “posh” it is.
In the video, the couple state upon entering that Toby Carvery is “a much more elegant experience” than the American “equivalent” of all-you-can-eat. Golden corral.

Cara says: “The interior is a lot more elevated than I expected it to be. People say Toby Carvery is the cheap version of the Sunday roast, but it’s so classy.
In the roast section, the couple opt for “a little bit of everything”, with pork, ham, turkey and beef on their plates. Then they move to the self-service side and add cauliflower cheese, macaroni and cheese, peas, potatoes, carrots, onion filling and, of course, Yorkshire puddings.
They are especially impressed with the potato options.
Cara says, “There are potatoes that have some kind of sauce, there are mashed potatoes, and there are every type of potato you could ever want.”
On first impression, the couple is surprised by how “stylish” the interior of the Toby Carvery is.
Cara and Jeremy are impressed by the wide selection of potatoes, exclaiming that there are “every kind of potato you could ever want.”
The couple fills their plate with ‘a little bit of everything’
The couple decide to sit at a table outside and continue their verdict on the £9 meal.
Jeremy describes the meat as “tender” and the puree as “soft and buttery.”
Jeremy digs into the macaroni and cheese and says it’s “pretty good,” even though it tastes “processed.” Cara adds: ‘This macaroni and cheese tastes like one of our famous processed cheeses, Velveeta. He is good. ‘
The couple choose to sit at a table outside the Ramsgate restaurant and continue with their verdict on the £9 meal.
Jeremy describes the meat as “tender” and the puree as “soft and buttery.”
After trying Carvery’s Yorkshire puddings, the couple agree: “There is no such thing as a bad Yorkshire pudding.”
But what impresses them most is the sauce. Cara says, “This is really tasty and I understand why Toby’s calls their sauce famous.” I feel like it shines in my Yorkshire pudding.’
Carly the dog also approves and is filmed licking her lips after tasting a carrot covered in sauce.
However, the couple is not satisfied with everything on their plates. Jeremey describes the turkey as “dry” and the stuffing only as “interesting looking.”
Cara adds: ‘I don’t like meat. That’s going to be a no from me. It’s too greasy.
The couple is very impressed with the sauce. Cara says, “This is really tasty and I understand why Toby’s calls their sauce famous.” I feel it shine in my Yorkshire pudding’
Carly the dog approves of the barbecue. In the photo above she licks her lips after tasting a carrot covered in sauce.
But overall, the couple decides the food is “pretty tasty.”
Cara says: “It’s not the fanciest experience you can have, but it’s definitely better than I thought and for the midweek price of £9 per person, what a deal!”
Jeremy adds: “Would you prefer one in a fancier pub, like a gastro pub? Probably.
‘But it would also be at least £5 more. It’s not a bad deal.
Looking back, did the couple overall think Toby Carvery surpassed his American counterparts?
They told MailOnline Travel: “Although American restaurants might have more choice in terms of items available, the overall quality of food was better at Toby Carvery.”
How does Toby Carvery’s offering compare to other Sunday roasts you’ve tried in the UK?
They told us: ‘We’ve had better Sunday roasts in pubs and independent restaurants. We’ve also had some more interesting sides at some of the smaller venues. In one we had a Stilton donut that was wonderful.
Would they go again?
They said, ‘We’d be interested in trying your breakfast. They also told us that we missed some of the sauces and that you can get unique drinks there too, so we would love to come back and try it again.
