Country star Thomas Rhett’s wife Lauren Akins has opened up about why she “resented” him early in their marriage and how she felt like she was “drowning” as their family grew.
In a video shared on YouTube by I am second In the video titled Lauren Akins – This Wasn’t The Plan, the 34-year-old revealed the problems she and Thomas, also 34, faced in their relationship while he was on tour around the world.
She admitted the couple had reached a breaking point at the height of her husband’s career, adding that she eventually “hated” him for pursuing his dreams while she was left to raise their children at home.
Lauren, who married the Unforgettable hitmaker in 2012, explained that their romance hit rocky waters when they decided to adopt her eldest daughter, Willa Gray.
Just after the couple began the adoption process, Lauren became pregnant while her husband was selling out stadiums, leaving her pregnant with one child and struggling to bring another home all by herself.

She explained that early in their marriage, Thomas’ career took off and she decided to go on tour with him.
However, she soon felt that she had given up on her dream of becoming a nurse.
“I realized very early on that I wasn’t going to work as a nurse in a hospital, so I started talking to my husband about it,” she said.
‘It was kind of like, ‘I know this is what you’re chasing, but I’m going to be honest, I really thought it wasn’t going to work out and I thought I was going to be a nurse and this was what our life was going to be like.’
“And that’s not God’s plan. I want to support you, but I feel like I need to find my own way through this as well.”
Shortly after, he decided to embark on a medical mission trip to Haiti, where he met Willa.
Lauren recalled calling her husband and explaining that she felt she was “called to help her find her forever home.”
Thomas replied, “We will.”

Lauren explained that their romance hit rocky waters when they decided to adopt their eldest daughter, Willa Gray (Lauren was spotted with Willa when she was five months old).
The lovebirds adopted Willa in 2017 after Lauren went through an “intense” 13-month adoption process on her own because Thomas was on tour.
Things got even more stressful when Lauren found out she was pregnant and was vomiting several times a day.
She confessed: ‘I would get sick and vomit about 50 times a day.
“During all this time I missed my husband. I started to feel a little resentful towards him because he was on tour in the United States.”
Lauren returned to the United States and her parents went to Haiti to bring Willa home. Three months after welcoming Willa into their home, Lauren gave birth to their second daughter, Ada.
“It was like we went from zero to two years pretty quickly as parents,” she said before explaining that she and the kids had decided to accompany Thomas on the tour.
However, it seemed that being on tour only intensified his problems.
Lauren admitted: “His life moved on and I feel like mine stopped. And I felt like we weren’t together anymore.”
“I feel like there was a lot of miscommunication, there was a lot of resentment that I held onto even during the adoption and after. I reached a breaking point. I didn’t like him and I resented him.”

The lovebirds felt like their marriage was falling apart, so they decided to undergo an “intense counseling session,” where they “shared everything” and decided to “reset.”
They then welcomed their third daughter, Lennon Love, in 2020, and their fourth child, Lillie Carolina, in 2021.
After giving birth to Lillie, Lauren confessed that she suffered from severe “postpartum depression.”
She admitted she felt like she was ‘drowning’ and remained bedridden for ‘months’ while Thomas looked after the children.
Lauren revealed that she finally got better after consistently going to the gym and praying, adding that she was very grateful for her four children.

In the past, Thomas has spoken about his family and the ways the couple decided to raise their children with Don.
He said: ‘Our life is anything but normal… my most important goal is to find ways that I can normalise their lives, so that there is never a feeling of ‘I deserve X’.
The composer also expressed that he and his wife took after their parents in terms of how they raised their daughters.
“We had wonderful parents who set an example for us of what it means to be a good mother and a good father, but not weaklings. It’s easy to let your child dominate you. Very easy,” she said.
