The four-time Grammy-nominated country music star took to X (Twitter) to question the Panthers letting one of their standout linebackers go last season, even though the team added guard Robert Hunt to their line offensive for five years. $100 million deal, earlier Monday.
Combs tweeted: ‘@Panthers WHAT ARE WE DOING?!?!? There was no first round pick for (Christian) McCaffrey a few years ago and now none for Burns?!?! Are we bombing the entire team here or what?
“I usually don’t comment on this kind of thing, but at this point it’s becoming a slow torture.”
The ‘Beautiful Crazy’ hitmaker was referring to McCaffrey’s trade to the 49ers in October 2022 in his tweet. San Francisco sent a second-, third- and fourth-round pick in last year’s NFL Draft, and a fifth-round pick in the next one, to acquire the services of the highly rated running back. McCaffrey was drafted by the Panthers when he entered the league in 2017.
Panthers linebacker Brian Burns, 25, leaves North Carolina to play for Brian Daboll’s Giants
Country singer Luke Combs is tired of seeing his beloved Panthers sacrifice their best assets.
He questioned the direction the Panthers are taking with X after the Burns trade became public.
Burns, who was also selected by Carolina in the 2019 NFL Draft, will get a five-year contract worth up to $150 million with $87.5 million in guarantees with the Giants, according to reports, even though the deal cannot be completed until I’m free. The agency starts on Wednesday.
The Panthers will receive a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick in the trade with New York.
Burns, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, will sign his franchise tag to facilitate the deal. Burns becomes the second-highest paid defensive end in NFL history.
The Giants had only 34 sacks last season.
Burns had 46 sacks in five seasons in Carolina. Only HOF Julius Peppers has more in his first five seasons with the Panthers
The Giants got a standout defensive player on a day when they lost star running back Saquon Barkley to the Eagles. The Giants quickly replaced Barkley by agreeing to terms with Devin Singletary.
Burns, who turns 26 next month, had 46 sacks in five seasons in Carolina. Only recent Hall of Famer Julius Peppers had more sacks in his first five seasons with the Panthers. Burns had 50 tackles and eight sacks in 2023 after moving from defensive end to outside linebacker with the Panthers moving to a 3-4 scheme.
The compensation for Burns is much less than what the Panthers would have received if they had traded him last summer when the Los Angeles Rams offered two first-round picks for the 2019 first-round draft pick.
Last year’s CEO, Scott Fitterer, has since been fired.
The decision to move on from Burns will save the Panthers $24 million under the salary cap this season, the money they would have paid him as their franchise player. The Panthers had attempted to reach a long-term deal with Burns last year and most recently at the NFL Combine, but were unable to reach an agreement.
