A tree trimmer was trapped and died Thursday inside a palm tree he was working on in a California neighborhood, officials said.

Simon Lemus, 49, had been working in a house in Hacienda Heights with his teenage daughter when he heard shouts from inside the tree.

When the teenager ran to the tree, he discovered that his father was stuck inside the canopy of a tree under a pile of fronds.

His family revealed that Lemus was doing a side project for a friend, but that he had been in the tree trimming business for some time.

"Receiving news about my father's death in this accident is very sad for our family," said his son, Simon Lemus Jr., through a translator to KTLA. "But he died doing what he loved most."

It is said that Lemus was stuck under the dry leaves of palm trees, which can be very heavy.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

His family shared that Lemus was doing a side project for a friend, but that he had been in the tree trimming business for a long time.

Friends of Lemus says that the tree trimmer was an experienced professional and had the right equipment.

"I know he's a very strong guy, so I do not know what happened there," said Leonel Granados. It's not the first; he had cut, I think, thousands of palms.

Lemus was remembered as a loving family man who was described as religious and with a strong work ethic.

"First of all, he was a person who loved God," said Lemus Jr. "He was the best kind of man, admirable, always smiling."
