She explained: ‘There are a lot of people my age that I talk to who are depressed about turning 60. You feel like this is the end of the road, that everything is going down the drain from here. And I don’t feel that way at all.

“I feel like the world is at my feet and there is so much to do. There is so much to do.”

Sue, who has played Eileen since 2000, revealed what she likes most about her role, saying that she “represents all women.”

“Everyone knows an Eileen. If you look on most streets across the UK you will find an Eileen or someone who looks like one,” she said.

‘She may not have as many abandoned and stray children as the TV Eileen, and she may not be able to fit as many people into her tiny terraced house, but I think she’s recognisable as a woman who’s faced a lot – a single mother dealing with whatever life throws at her and not just coping, but somehow thriving.’

Elsewhere, Sue revealed what really goes on behind the scenes at Weatherfield in an interview with The mirror.

Recalling a wild night out for her on-screen son Ryan Thomas’ 21st birthday, she told how “a quiet drink” ended with her storming into his dressing room in the early hours.

Sue explained: ‘It made perfect sense to me to go straight from the party to the nearby studios and sneak into my dressing room and sleep until my makeup call came.’

She continued: ‘Luckily no one noticed and I was definitely not the only person who did this over the years.

‘I also admit that some of my best lunchtime naps have been in a well-known character’s bed!

“I don’t do it so much now, but sometimes, if we’re filming in Grimshaws and it’s lunchtime, I’ll stay there and have a nap on the sofa.”
