A highway patrol officer had to fight for his life after his police car collided with a truck in Queensland’s Scenic Rim.

Police constable Chris Leonard, believed to be in his 50s, was freed from a patrol vehicle in a dramatic rescue after the rollover about 1pm on the Cunningham Highway in Warrill View, south-east of Brisbane .

Paramedics began treating the officer for life-threatening head and arm injuries while he was still trapped inside the vehicle.

The truck driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries and taken to Ipswich Hospital in a “stable” condition, according to Queensland Ambulance.

A rescue helicopter responded to the scene, according to paramedics.

Senior Constable Leonard, who was on duty at the time of the crash, is now at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
