Constance Marten and her boyfriend Mark Gordon are charged with gross negligence manslaughter

Aristocrat Constance Marten and her boyfriend Mark Gordon are charged with manslaughter by gross negligence after baby’s body was found in the woods

Constance Marten and her lover Mark Gordon have been charged with homicide by gross negligence.

The couple were arrested in Brighton on Monday evening, ending a nationwide police hunt that began when they fled with their baby seven weeks ago.

But Marten, 35, and partner Gordon, 48, were without the newborn when officers rushed in to arrest them.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed tonight that it has cleared charges against the pair, who will appear in Brighton Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning.

Marten and Gordon have also been charged with concealing the birth of a child and perverting the course of justice.

Barry Hughes, Chief Prosecutor of CPS London North, said: ‘The CPS has authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Constance Marten and Mark Gordon with homicide by gross negligence.

Mark Gordon, 48, and Constance Marten, 35, had been missing for 54 days and slept rough in a tent

Constance Marten, aged 35, and Mark Gordon, aged 48, have also been charged with concealing the birth of a child and perverting the course of justice. These allegations stem from their arrest on Monday as a result of a lengthy police investigation to determine their whereabouts and that of their baby.’

It is extremely important that there is no online reporting, comment or exchange of information that could harm this procedure in any way.

It comes after the remains of a newborn were found near a public footpath in an area not yet searched by police in Brighton yesterday.

Officers have so far been unable to confirm the baby’s sex and an autopsy has not yet been performed, while police say it is also too early to give a specific date of death.
