Conor McGregor has admitted he was 'in the wrong' and must 'get his head screwed on' after sucker punching an old man in a Dublin pub.

Footage emerged last week of the former UFC champion, 31, striking the elderly victim in the face after he refused to drink the fighter's own brand or whiskey.

"I was in the wrong." That man deserved to enjoy his time in the pub without having to end the way it did, "McGregor told ESPN2.

'It was five months ago and I tried to make amends and I made amends back then.

'But that doesn't matter, I was in the wrong and I must take accountability, take responsibility.

'I owe that to the people that have supported me. I owe it to my mother, my father, my family. I owe it to the people that trained me in martial arts. That's not who I am.

'I have to realize that's not the attitude or the behavior of a leader, or a martial artist, or a champion.

'So, I must get my head screwed and just get back in the game and fight for redemption, retribution, respect.

'That's not the reason I got into martial arts or studying combat sports. The reason I got into was defending against that type of scenario.

McGregor went on to say that each time he sees the footage it is like 'a dagger' going through his heart.

The victim told the Irish Daily Star yesterday that McGregor was a 'bully with money'.

He was said to have told McGregor "I don't want to drink that ****" before the punch was thrown during the April incident.
