Burnley team-mates Connor Roberts and Wout Weghorst exchanged words on Wednesday night as the Welshman confronted the match winner asking why he didn’t for their shared club side.

Wales, buoyed by Sunday’s win over Ukraine that saw them attend their first World Cup since 1958, looked like they had taken a point late over Rhys Norrington-Davies.

However, Weghorst turned up in the 94th minute with a diving head that saw the Netherlands take all three points and lead Wales to their second consecutive Nations League defeat.

The match had heated up as Wales went in search of an equaliser, and the atmosphere at Cardiff City Stadium translated to the pitch.

Almost as soon as Rhys Norrington-Davies thought he had picked up a point for Wales, they were fed back with Weghorst scoring a brilliant header on the other side.

The defeat leaves Wales behind in Group A4 of the Nations League, while the Netherlands have two wins out of two.

The tense atmosphere seemed to boil over after the final whistle as right-back Roberts confronted Weghorst who seemed to ask him: ‘Why didn’t you do that for Burnley?’

Weghorst was signed to the Lancashire club in January to try and save them from relegation, but scored just two goals in 20 appearances as the Clarets were relegated to the championship.

In the clip, Roberts was visibly frustrated running to Weghorst right after the final whistle.

As he got closer to the Netherlands international, he said very clearly ‘why didn’t you do that for Burnley?’

Match winner Weghorst brushed aside his club mate as the Welshman kept shouting things at him. Finally Weghorst turned and seemed to say ‘this isn’t about Burnley, shut up.’

Weghorst, who arrived for £12million from Germany’s Wolfsburg, has been on the map since Burnley’s relegation and says he doesn’t expect to play Championship football next season.

Weghorst told Voetbal International: ‘We have clearly agreed in advance that I will not play in the championship.

“The club would like to keep me and will do everything they can to return to the Premier League as soon as possible.”

He added: “For next season it is important that I can perform at a high level, also with a view to the World Cup in Qatar. You shouldn’t believe everything the media says.

‘There is interest from Germany, England and Turkey. First I’m going to focus on Orange here and perform as well as possible. Then we’ll talk to Burnley about what’s next.’

Meanwhile, Burnley fans on Twitter praised Roberts for his post-match actions.

One wrote: ‘Roberts quite rightly asked Weghorst ‘why don’t you do that for Burnley?’ after his last minute winner against Wales. The first time I’ve seen WW with a header all year.’

While another wrote that Roberts should get the bracelet for what he did.

Connor Roberts asks [Wout] Weghorst why he didn’t do that for Burnley, give him the bracelet,” they wrote.
