Black Panther actress Connie Chiume has passed away at the age of 72.
The South African actress died on Tuesday at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, according to a family statement posted on the star’s Instagram on Wednesday.
It began: ‘The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of internationally acclaimed and award-winning actress, Connie Chiume.
‘Connie Chiume passed away at Garden City Hospital today, August 6, 2024. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time. More details will be communicated by the family.’
Although there are few details about his death that have been reported, his son Nongelo Chiume revealed to the South African news network Newzroom Africa that she had been “admitted for a medical procedure” prior to her death.

The South African actress passed away on Tuesday at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, according to a family statement posted on the star’s Instagram on Wednesday.
Nongelo said: “He was recovering well, but unfortunately we received the news of his passing today.”
He also added that he and the rest of his family “cannot confirm” any of the details surrounding his mother’s death.
Nongelo said, however, that the family “will be in constant communication with any updates they need to share with the general public.”
Connie’s son was also asked on the broadcast how he would like his mother to be remembered.
Nongelo responded: “We want her to be remembered as a person who gave everything through her talents. We want her to be remembered as someone who was selfless and who always wanted to see the next person doing great things and believing in the talents God gave her.”
In addition, the South African government posted a tribute to Connie on X (formally Twitter).
They wrote: ‘Our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the legendary multi-award winning actress Connie Chiume. Her excellent work will always be remembered #RIPConnieChiume.’
Connie was best known for her work in the 2018 MCU blockbuster Black Panther, where she played the tribal leader Zawavari.

Between those two films, lead Chadwick Boseman passed away at the age of 43 from colon cancer in August 2020.
He was very private about his battle with the disease and even hid it from his Black Panther co-stars.
In addition to the Marvel films, Connie had over 30 credits to her name, including a starring role in the television series Housekeepers for 18 episodes between 2018 and 2022.
She also starred in Beyoncé’s 2020 musical film Black Is King, which was the visual companion to the live-action remake of The Lion King, where she played Simba’s mother, Sarabi.

Before turning to acting, Connie was a teacher and is seen in Hollywood in October 2022.
Connie won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series at the South African Film and Television Awards for her work in Soul City.
He also won another SAFTA award years later for Zone 14 in 2009.

Chiume is survived by her four children.
