This is the shocking moment a cheeky pensioner is seen traveling the wrong way on a busy motorway – in a motorized wheelchair.

Footage shared yesterday shows the anonymous man advancing alongside a motorway on the outskirts of Dublin, against traffic.

While cautious drivers seemed to randomly avoid the road hog, the pensioner himself seemed completely unfazed by the disruption he was causing.

The video appears to have been filmed by a road user stopped in the left lane.

At first, the man is not visible among the busy car traffic, but soon appears in a gap in the traffic.

Traveling in the opposite direction within the white line on the central concrete barrier, he can be seen sitting in the chair, bundled up in a coat, hat and blanket.

In slow traffic, the wheelchair user appears to be going as fast as the traffic and does not appear to attempt to stop.

The footage was posted on social media where it received more than 322,000 views.

One said: ‘Didn’t anyone call Gardai about him? That guy could have caused a major closure of the M50 on the way to his heavenly abode.

Another commented: ‘The vehicle should be confiscated and the guy disqualified from owning one.

“Seeing these guys on mobility scooters driving with impunity on sidewalks, highways and anywhere they want.”

A third wrote: “I’ve heard of people abandoning their pets on the side of the road, but it’s a sign that times are getting tough when they abandon their parents.”

Another said: “Probably sick of his caregiver talking behind his back and pushing him around all the time.”

It comes after a disabled pensioner earlier this year caused an accident while drunk on his mobility scooter.

The father of one Stewart O’Neil, 65, who lives in a nursing home and had never had a driving license, had been given the 13 km/h electric vehicle so that he could regularly visit his son, who lives a mile away.

But after visiting his local nail bar for a pedicure, O’Neil was so delighted with the results that he started drinking vodka to toast his newfound freedom to roam.

On his way back home, he was seen traveling at high speed down the sidewalk on his Sunrise medical mobility scooter before weaving, crashing into a tree and nearly falling.

He then swerved onto the road uncontrollably and crashed into the back of a car as the driver watched in horror through the rear-view mirror.

Police were called to the location in Southport town center in Merseyside and found it had more than double the alcohol limit. No one was injured in the crush.

According to a recent report, mobility scooters are involved in accidents almost every day, with more than 100 victims injured and nine people killed annually, according to one analysis.

The alarming figures show that scooter riders were involved in 334 accidents in 2022 (the most recent year for which data is available), an increase of 77 per cent in two years.

In addition to nine deaths, there were 109 accidents in which victims were seriously injured, some of whom were hit by out-of-control drivers.
