The child actress turned talk show host, 49, was excited when Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the original film, recently hinted that a sequel was being made.

Discussing the topic in a preview clip from his talk show, Drew explained how he had texted his Fifty First Dates co-star Adam Sandler, 57, to find out if he had written a new script.

The actress said: ‘Are you kidding me? I love you. I need it and I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison.

“And then I sent Sandler a video of that and then he sent me another video and I’m waiting to see if he confirms about the Happy Gilmore 2 script…

The clip then skipped and reunited with Drew as she looked at her phone and excitedly announced, ‘Well, this just arrived. I have breaking news. So I’ll just say this from my source: it’s in process… So there is a process and that process is in process.’

He then paused and suggested that this part of the conversation should be “cut” because he didn’t want to be accused of making things up.

‘I don’t want to be a liar, but he showed me that and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. The fans are demanding it, dammit!’

Before playing arrogant golf pro Shooter, Christopher McDonald had made a name for himself playing idiots in films like Thelma and Louise, Fatal Instinct and Grumpy Old Men.

After Happy Gilmore, he continued as an in-demand character actor working on shows such as The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and The Good Wife, McDonald.

Allen Covert, who played scruffy homeless caddy Otto on Happy Gilmore, had previously had roles on both Airheads and Billy Madison.

He then appeared in The Wedding Singer and Big Daddy, while working as founder and author of Cherrytree Books, a company specializing in children’s literature for the iPad.

Julie Bowen’s role as Virginia Venit on Happy Gilmore served as a springboard to a role on Multiplicity and recurring roles on television shows such as ER and Lost. Additionally, the actress appeared in Horrible Bosses, Family Guy, and Children’s Hospital.

Today, Julie is best known for playing Claire Dunphy on Modern Family, a role that has earned her two Emmy Awards.

Happy Gilmore follows Sandler’s main character, who learns that the house has been taken from his sweet grandmother (Frances Bay).

The failed ice hockey player discovers he has a talent for golf and competes in a tournament to raise money to save his grandmother’s house.

When he discovers that he has the surprising and unexpected talent to propel a golf ball more than 400 feet, he wins a local tournament and joins the PGA, where he becomes involved with McGavin, who thinks he is bad at the game.

The film also stars Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, a publicist for the PGA Tour, Carl Weathers as Chubbs, the golf pro who teaches him the finer points of the game, along with a memorable cameo from The Price Is Right host Bob Barker.

The film was a modest success, grossing $41.2 million worldwide on a $12 million budget and would become a cult classic on home video.
