An Australian mum has baffled the internet over a seemingly innocent photo of her 14-year-old daughter’s room after she received a ‘makeover’ from Bunnings Warehouse.
The woman, who lives in South Australia, took to Facebook on Monday with photos of the finished product, which showed her daughter’s bed, desk and storage units.
“Another fortune spent at Bunnings we finally hope to tidy up Miss 14’s bedroom for her birthday,” she wrote. Paint, cubes, and desktop are all from Bunnings.
“She has two stacks of cubes, one behind the other that equals 16 cubes as they’ve been wasted under the bed space.”
The woman, who lives in South Australia, took to Facebook on Monday with photos of the finished product, which showed her daughter’s bed, desk and storage units.
While she was clearly proud of the design, a few commenters decided to point out the safety risks involved in placing a little girl’s mattress on stacked cubes.
I don’t want to be that person but this bed is not safe. One woman wrote that they already had weight liners on those shelves and I can tell you now that the mattress alone will cover the maximum weight.
“I’ll have a regular single bed and added drawers under the bed for storage”
But the mother replied: ‘It has a whole wood frame built in and hung… its holders in the walls, we won’t expect safety!’ Without the blocks there the bed is still safe.
Another woman jumped to her defense but made another complaint.

The desk photo didn’t receive nearly as much comment as the bed itself
My husband and I can sit on those cubes just fine. They are usually made in a bench press and the weight is distributed between two units here so they are stronger.
“The main concern would be mold and mildew in the mattress because it has no ventilation underneath.”
But the original poster got a response to this supposed bug, too.
There is actually about 25cm along the long back side of the bed which is open with the head end open where the window would be. She replied that the mattress also does not sit on the cubes, there will be 4-5 cm between the cubes and the slats of the bed base, so hopefully that will be enough.
But that hasn’t stopped more commentators from suggesting that altitude could be an issue.
This bed does not look safe at all. If it rolls to the right on the edge doesn’t it flip the entire mattress? said a woman.
Another said, “I hope you don’t roll on the bed in the middle of the night.”
A third added: ‘Great idea but can these cube shelves be used in this way? Will they hold out?
Bunnings sells a number of cube storage solutions that can be arranged vertically or stacked to fit your space needs.
