Witnesses have told about their horror after a knife-handling man crashed into pedestrians in Melbourne before stabbing shoppers and calling the police.

More than 100 police swarmed the bustling Bourke Street in the city just after 4pm on Friday after reports from a man who fired his car and chased people with a knife.

The attacker was shot by officers and brought to the hospital under police surveillance, while many innocent pedestrians were treated for stab wounds.

Bystander Sarah called radio station 3AW to the scene as & # 39; chaotic & # 39; to describe.

Other witnesses told the Herald Sun that they saw the man who chased the police with the knife, even though they told him to retreat.

Another fearful witness, Ben, called the radio station to say that he saw a white sheet covering a body in the middle of the sidewalk.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed to the radio station that at least three people had been rushed to the hospital.

One is admitted with neck injury and is suspected to be in a critical condition.

Another has a head injury, although the severity is unclear, while the injuries and condition of a third are not yet known.

The police closed the city after the attack.

The attacker was escorted to the hospital under guard and the car fire was extinguished, but the police dropped off the intersection.
