A mother accused of killing her two young daughters by stabbing them and driving them off the side of a bridge sees life behind bars.
Christina Martinez, 33, reportedly took a knife to her two girls, aged eight and ten, at their home in Manzanola, Colorado, and then drove them to the Arkansas River Bridge in her SUV.
Miraculously, everyone survived the horror disaster and when Martinez was released from hospital on Tuesday, she was immediately arrested by the office of the Sheriff of Otero County.
She is charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree abuse, two counts of child abuse and arson.
Police said Martinez launched the vehicle from the side of the bridge and plunged into the water.
A passerby witnessed the horror scenes and the rescuers were able to rescue the girls from the vehicle, while Martinez escaped the vehicle on her own.
Martinez is being held in Otero County Jail in southern Colorado with a $ 500,000 deposit.
Her first appearance in court is scheduled for April 24.
Because the incident involves allegations regarding possible child abuse, information released on the case will be limited, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
A spokesperson for the Otero County Sherriff office said: & A 39-year-old woman is suspected of having her daughters (8 and 10 years) stabbed in Manzanola early in the morning and later having them in her vehicle abandoned.
& # 39; It is believed that the woman then drove the girls north along Colorado State Highway 207, toward Crowley County, as she left the lane and landed in the Arkansas River.
Police said Martinez is launching the vehicle from the side of the bridge and crashing into the water (the Arkansas River Bridge is pictured)
& # 39; A passerby in the area named emergency services and the two girls (10 and 8) were rescued from the SUV.
& # 39; The female driver was outside the vehicle. All three were transported for medical treatment. Although their injuries are serious, everyone is expected to survive.
& # 39; The sheriff's office in the province of Otero, the city of the manzanola marshal and the 16th courthouse of justice are investigating the events that led to the traffic accident.
& # 39; The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has also been asked for help with the investigation. & # 39;
