Colin Murray and his wife Carly Paradis, a composer, took a week-long vacation before ending their 11-year marriage.
The former husband and wife, who split at the end of last year, are said to have flown to Spain in September to “save the marriage.”
The trip came as Murray, 45, appeared to be in a good mood after filming a TV series in Northern Ireland.
But a source said: ‘He was in great shape when he was back filming in Northern Ireland, and said he was on his way to Spain with his wife when the job was done.
Turns out that while he seemed cheerful at the time, it was a holiday for them to try and save the marriage. Too bad it didn’t work out.’
The trip came after Murray, 45, appeared in high spirits after finishing filming a TV series in Northern Ireland

Murray, who was revealed as the regular face of Countdown in January, had spent several weeks taping the BBC show Food Fest Northern Ireland alongside his former Radio 1 DJ co-host and friend Edith Bowman.
The filming came as part of a hectic work schedule for the broadcaster that sources say led to a ‘wedge’ between him and his wife.
A source previously said, “Colin and Carly split after work pushed them apart. Colin was very busy with Countdown and his BBC Radio 5 Live show, while Carly was busy working as a musician.
‘They finally made the decision at the end of last year that it no longer worked between them.
“Colin and Carly have been open with their friends and family about their breakup and are trying to move on as best they can.”
It comes after Murray announced last month that he is stepping down from his role as host of the hit BBC 5 Live show Fighting Talk.
He tweeted, “I have decided – a difficult decision – to make this series of Fighting Talk my last as host.
“I’ve spent more seasons at FT than Wenger at Arsenal. Time to give someone else a chance. I will fill in next season when a new host goes on holiday, so still part of the team.’
Meanwhile, his Canadian-born composer wife Paradis, 42, is best known for composing the Line Of Duty theme.
She said in a cryptic Instagram post last month that the sea could “heal tears” after she and Murray were revealed to have split.
In a post alongside a photo of herself on a ferry, she wrote, “The cure for everything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea. Happy new year.’
Sources say the musician has spent most of her time in the United States since she split from new Countdown host Murray, aged 45, late last year.
She also recently spent the night partying with friend and PR manager Chandler Poling in Hollywood, posting a photo of them at a Saturday night music party.
Her feed doesn’t include any image of Murray, but it’s clear that some of the images the pair have posed for on social media have been removed.
They show the twosome in happier times on holiday, buying a Mini and joining them at a dress-up party.
Murray seemed to confirm he was single this month when he told the Radio Times when the Radio Times asked him who operated the television remote in his house: ‘It’s just me, therefore me. I am the master of my domain.’
He is said to have split from Paradis after growing apart since taking on the Countdown presenter role from 78-year-old Anne Robinson last July.
The pair, who married in 2012, ended their relationship late last year and have quietly told friends.
A source told The Sun: ‘Colin and Carly split after being pushed apart by work.
Colin has been very busy with Countdown and his BBC Radio 5 Live show, while Carly is busy as a musician.
