Colchester is the UNHAPPIEST place in Britain… where does YOUR area rank in the UK misery league?

A new survey has revealed the UK’s unluckiest places, highlighting on the map the locations where Britons are statistically most fed up, such as Colchester, Redditch, Norwich, Tunbridge Wells and Lambeth.

According to the most recent data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), Colchester is at the bottom of the list of happy places in the country.

Colchester, often known as Britain’s first city, was too given the status of a Roman Colonia long before the foundations of London were built.

But if we fast-forward to 2021 and 2022, people said they are generally dissatisfied with life in the Essex town, with fewer residents reporting that they think things done in life are more worthwhile than ever.

With an average satisfaction score of 6.8 out of 10, the town is down compared to neighboring Babergh at 7.8 and Briantree at 7.7.

Second from the bottom was Redditch, in north-east Worcestershire, famous for its Needles Nuseum.

About 15 miles south of Birmingham, Redditch was the only place to finish in the bottom five for happiness, life satisfaction and considering things done in life as worthwhile.

Further south, Norwich reported being the third most unlucky in the country.

The cobbled town with its historic castle, the town is a hub of literary activity, with actors and writers such as The Crown star Olivia Colman and His Dark Materials author Philip Pullman calling it home.

People living in Norwich also reported feeling the highest level of anxiety in the country.

The Kentish town, which came to Tunbridge Wells, was famous for its High Rocks which became a popular seaside resort during the Restoration.

But the city’s historical association with spas doesn’t seem to have improved residents in recent years.

The former opera house in town is now a Weatherspoon pub, complete with brass balustrades and grand chandeliers.

Lambeth, a neighborhood in South London, was the fifth least unhappy place in Britain.

The council had a famous confrontation with Margaret Thatcher in 1979 under labour, with the knight Edward ‘Red Ted’ protesting by refusing to propose budgets.

Following the stalemate, Thatcher ordered 32 councilors to repay lost interest due to budget delays and disqualified them from office for five years.

In 2021, an independent study found council workers did little to help more than 700 children in South London care homes who suffered from cruelty and sexual abuse between the 1960s and 1990s.

No data were available for Oadby and Wigston, Gravesham, the Orkney Islands and the City of London.
