"Recently the president twittered a statement in which he called me weak, and it was true, but for a different reason than he suggested," said Cohen, according to multiple reports. "It was because I felt time and time again that it was my duty to hide his dirty deeds."

Trump accused Cohen last month as a "weak person" to plead guilty to lie to Congress in special counsel Robert MuellerRussia probe.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison on Wednesday for a series of crimes he had committed while working for Trump, including campaign financing violations resulting from payments to two women claiming to have done business with Trump.

Trump's former old lawyer and fixer on Wednesday said he had "a personal and mental confinement" since he started working for Trump in early 2000.

"This may seem hard to believe, but today is one of the most meaningful days in my life," Bloomberg said, Cohen said. "The irony is today that I get my freedom back.I have led personal and mental confinement since the fateful day and accepted the offer to work for a famous real estate agent whose business vision I admired greatly."

Cohen also regretted the impact of his legal misery on his family.

"There is no sense that I can replace the suffering with which I live every day, knowing that my actions brought undeserved pain and shame to my family," Cohen said. "I deserve that shame, they do not."

By the end of his remarks, Cohen handed a tissue to his crying daughter, says Bloomberg.

Federal prosecutors in New York last week recommended that Cohen serve "substantial" jail time despite his continued cooperation in the Mueller survey and other law enforcement investigations.

The prosecutors also said that Cohen had committed campaign funding violations in the direction of "Individual-1", which has been identified as Trump.

Cohen concluded that he takes responsibility "for every act I solemnly promised: the personal for me and those involving the President of the United States of America."

After Cohen spoke, Judge William Pauley said that Cohen has pleaded guilty for a "real smorgasbord of fraudulent behavior." (function(d, s, id) {
