“He’s been a friend of the family for a long time and he just broke it. That swimming just showed how resilient he is,” Cody . said The Daily Telegraph.

He also cited Michael Phelps who broke the 50-second record in the 100m butterfly in Rome in 2009 as influential to him.

“That swimming was about redemption. There was quite a bit of controversy when Phelps won Olympic gold by a hundredth of a second the year before… and many people thought that wasn’t the right result.

Speaking to Newscorp, he said he was “dusting himself” after the defeat.

He claimed his two weeks in quarantine could have contributed to a loss of his optimal pool performance.

“I probably would have liked to drive a little faster, but it was the first race back in a long time and I’ve only just come out of quarantine,” he said.

Cody continued: “Two weeks out of the water saves you a lot of time, but I had to go through quarantine at one point.”

“I just wanted to get up and run at least the 50 yards to dust myself off.”

His pop career peaked in the early 2010s when he cracked the charts with singles like ‘iYiYi’ and ‘On My Mind’.
