Champion swimmer-turned-singer Cody Simpson has been subjected to some brutal praise, following his performance in the AFL Grand Final on Saturday.
The Gold Coast-born singer, 27, wowed the crowd at Melbourne’s MCG when he took to the stage to sing a heartfelt rendition of Australia’s National Anthem.
Cody cut a dapper figure in a custom-made black suit as he put his heart and soul into the performance and had the crowd in the palm of his hand.
Many AFL fans quickly took to social media to pay a cheeky compliment to the former swimmer, who earlier this year failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics, joking that he was a much better singer than an athlete.
‘That swimmer just crushed the anthem. ‘Cody Simpson should go to a talent show or something,’ one viewer joked.
‘I thought Cody was a swimmer?’ added a second person.
‘Swimmers take over the ‘G this year. Cody singing the anthem,” a third user chimed in, and a fourth added: “Swimming’s loss is music’s gain.”
Cody rose to fame in 2009 as a preteen after uploading clips of him singing to YouTube, which helped launch his music career.

He later became a professional swimmer in 2019 and won a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
