Second seed Coco Gauff suffered a fourth-round exit at Wimbledon for the third time
  • Navarro beat Wimbledon’s second seed 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals
  • Gauff has yet to make it past the fourth round at the All England Club.
  • Navarro will face Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals.

Coco Gauff’s hopes of winning Wimbledon were dashed on Sunday when the No. 2 seed was beaten in straight sets by compatriot Emma Navarro.

The American, seeded No. 2 at the Championships, was defeated by Navarro 6-4, 6-3 on Centre Court, and the No. 19 seed is now into her first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Gauff, who won her first Grand Slam singles title at last year’s US Open, failed to capitalise on Iga Swiatek’s elimination on Saturday. Gauff was defeated in just one hour and 14 minutes.

While her first major breakthrough came at the All England Club at age 15, when she became the youngest player to qualify in the tournament’s history and beat Venus Williams in the first round on her way to a fourth-place finish, Gauff has never bettered that result.

He also exited in the fourth round in his next appearance, in 2021, then lost in the third round in 2022 and in the first round a year ago.

Navarro, 23 and seeded 19th, grew up in South Carolina and won an NCAA title for Virginia, reaching the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

Gauff continued to make mistakes Sunday, staring toward the center court guest box, where one of her two coaches, Brad Gilbert, often stood with his hands on his hips.

Her departure opened up the women’s singles draw even further.

The top three women’s seeds are already out, as are last year’s two finalists.

That leaves 2022 champion Elena Rybakina as the clear favourite to win her second Venus Rosewater heat on Saturday.

Rybakina is one of only two top-10 seeds remaining in the women’s singles draw.

French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini, seeded seventh, will face Navarro in the quarter-finals.
